The underground has a knack for producing sonic anomalies when we need them most, and experimental art rock duo The Discretes have delivered a wonderfully unsettling antidote to modern complacency. Arriving digitally on 11 August 2026 via their independent imprint Oriflamme, with a vinyl release following on 15 September, their new album ‘In Sore Bless’ is a ritualistic, beautifully dark collection that pulls listeners into a heavy, meditative trance.
Composed of globe-trotting multimedia artist CECILIA and New York transplant and noise enthusiast Ali Ayrik, the pairing yields a record that feels completely untethered from mainstream constraints, thriving instead on structural tension and a sense of fierce resistance.
Musically, the duo effortlessly weave together an abrasive yet gorgeous tapestry of ambient textures, noise rock, cinematic post-rock, and fragments of Anatolian-trip-hop. It is a striking genre amalgam where synth drones, hand percussion, and layered strings serve as a raw canvas for CECILIA’s multilingual vocals. Singing in English, French, and Italian, her performance feels akin to speaking in tongues, invoking an elusive, spiritual love that simultaneously binds and repels. There is an undeniable vulnerability to these tracks, mirroring a dark night of the soul while firmly rejecting the outer world for answers.
Discussing their creative philosophy, the duo explain, "We find inspiration in the entropy of life. Sometimes we celebrate it and at other times we resist it. Art and music act like a bandpass filter, cut out the sound and fury and focus your attention on what moves you. Creativity is channelling energy to make your own bandpass filter and inspiration is the motivation to express ourselves and to take leaps of faith when doing so."
While the brooding, monolithic atmosphere can occasionally feel impenetrable for the uninitiated, the emotional payoff for those who engage with its deep, post-noise ballads is immense. Fans of Chelsea Wolfe, Portishead, and MONO will find comfort in the heavy, shadowy corners of this record. Reflecting on their chemistry, Ayrik notes, "Music accompanies us throughout our lives. It’s a steady drip of inspiration in itself and there's always so much to learn and explore. CECILIA's art and singing inspire me."
Ultimately, ‘In Sore Bless’ succeeds because it feels entirely human, translating universal anxieties into a singular, mesmerising ceremony. To ensure you do not miss a single beat of their hypnotic journey, dive into their world by tracking down their Bandcamp page.
