The frantic pace of modern releases often leaves little room for slow, deliberate craft. Yet, Swiss multi-genre composer Alf Jetzer operates on an entirely different timeline, treating composition not as a race for attention, but as a patient act of devotion. His latest album, ‘Unfolding’, arrives as a beautifully realised encapsulation of this philosophy—a dense, hypnotic piece of music that bridges the gap between diverse global traditions and deep, internal stillness.
Jetzer labels his sonic signature as 'world music with spirit', an apt descriptor for a collection that gracefully intertwines elements of meditation music, world traditions, progressive rock, jazz, and classical architectures. Built over a meticulous two-month creation process, every texture within the arrangement feels deliberate. Jetzer, who handles every instrument himself, treats his gear like a visual medium. From the breathy resonance of the Armenian duduk and flutes to guitars, sanza, and grounding percussion, he uses these varied timbres as pigments to map out a vivid picture in the mind's eye.
The depth of the album is directly tied to Jetzer's lifelong commitment to his art and spiritual practice, functioning as a distillation of 40 years of recording experience. This isn't music designed for casual, passive consumption; it is an environment to be stepped into. The arrangement allows melodies to hover suspended in the air before gently resolving, mirroring the rhythmic breathing of meditation.
Remarkably, despite the decades spent refining this approach, Jetzer has largely bypassed the conventional race for accolades. As the composer notes: "Since I devoted myself entirely to composing and perfecting my music and recording it for decades, I never had time for anything else. For me, music (enhanced through years of meditation) is and always has been the real path. As a result, I have practically no palmares to show. Instead, I can now offer a long-matured "product" that is unique in its form. Only a few musicians have the patience to see something like this through (composing/recording as a standalone art). You must forget about the "big deal" because it can negatively affect the process. But now it's the time to go out."
The result of that solitary discipline is a piece of art carrying an unmistakable vitality. Speaking on the release, Jetzer reflects: "’Unfolding’ represents a high point in my work. Dedicated work which took over 2 years to realise. I have compiled my 40 years of experience in recording in ‘Unfolding’. One important thing applies to all products and activities: the more dedication you invest in a product, the more "soul" and vitality it can convey."
‘Unfolding’ succeeds because it refuses to rush. It is a vibrant, soul-stirring landscape that rewards focused listeners with an immersive sense of presence. To catch his next sonic canvas, make sure to find him on Bandcamp.
