Melbourne’s own indie-pop trailblazer Gypsy Lee has officially unleashed her latest four-track collection, ‘On A Mission From God And Gucci’. Capping off an immensely productive spell of songwriting, the project offers a candid glimpse into the artist's personal evolution, balancing sharp theatricality with genuine vulnerability.
Crafted alongside acclaimed producer Andrew Lowden—known for his collaborative work with Thelma Plum and Matt Corby—the record brings together a stellar group of musicians to bring Gypsy Lee’s vivid sonic vision to life. Across the four entries, the EP charts a path through early adulthood, embracing every bump along the road with unwavering poise.
The track list moves seamlessly between contrasting tones. Opener ‘Snitches’ leans into grand, baroque-pop instrumentation, which immediately shifts into the witty, sharp-tongued hooks of ‘What Doesn't Kill You Costs A Lot in Therapy’. Meanwhile, the soaring single ‘I Hope You Like Crazy Girls’ (featuring Sydney pop talent Evie Irie) has already made waves across radio play on triple j and high-rotation playlist slots on major streaming platforms. Bringing the record home is ‘Scene of the Crime/Psychedelic Summer Nights’, a sprawling closer that highlights her impressive vocal range before expanding into a lush, cinematic finale.
Reflecting on the creation of the record, the 22-year-old songwriter shares how her personal growth directly shaped the sound, "These songs are the most honest thoughts in my head and feelings from my heart," Gypsy Lee says. "A total representation of where I am in life right now as a 22 year old navigating life. There’s definitely a fair share of unhingedness which I love, but throughout the EP, I'm especially proud of the underlying deepness and meaning of each lyric and melody."
The origin of the title itself arrived unexpectedly: "just fell into my hands on the way to a funeral."
"I’m definitely the kind of girl that believes everything happens for a reason… or at least I try to. I liked the idea that making this EP was almost a calling, maybe that my purpose this lifetime is to write and share truths people can resonate with. And doing it with style."
To mark the launch, Gypsy Lee takes the new material to the stage for two intimate Australian headline shows, the first in Sydney on October 8th, and the second in Melbourne on October 14th.
‘On A Mission From God And Gucci’ is available to stream today across Spotify, Apple Music, and all major platforms. Make sure to follow Gypsy Lee on Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram to catch live dates and behind-the-scenes updates.
