Melbourne’s genre-defying post-punk outfit Gun Laws are back with their latest single, ‘Deals! Deals! Deals!’, an explosive release that highlights the group’s restless creative growth.
Founded in Melbourne back in 2019 by long-time friends Jake, Matt, and Jordie, the band cut their teeth in the Australian underground following earlier DIY roots in Adelaide punk acts. After making waves with their self-titled 2020 debut and 2022’s 'Merzbau Burning', the core trio expanded their sonic palette by bringing guest performers Elisa (vocals/percussion) and Waldie (saxophone) into the fold as full-time members.
This new five-piece arrangement pays massive dividends on ‘Deals! Deals! Deals!’. Recorded alongside producer Rohan Sforcina—with rhythm tracking at Coburg’s Sydney Road Studios before finishing vocals in Mont Albert and mastering via Adelaide’s Adam Collins—the track builds on the group’s hardcore and punk heritage while pushing far beyond standard boundaries. Aggressive guitars and driving rhythms mesh with angular post-punk structures, soulful brass flourishes, and subtle experimental touches. Front and centre is the band’s signature four-way vocal trade-off, creating an unpredictable, chaotic energy that mirrors their fiery live set.
Underneath the sonic friction lies a deeply human core. Lyrically, vocalists Jordie and Elisa draw straight from periods of intense personal struggle, navigating the weight of clinical depression and the delicate balancing act of parenting through a relationship breakdown. Rather than sinking into cynicism, the single transforms individual hardship into a unified anthem of endurance. It is a stark reflection on the daily compromises required to get by, bound together by a fierce belief that "even in its darkest hour - life is beautiful."
