Denzel Curry has never been one to play it safe, and his latest evolution sees him stepping into a mentor-curator role that feels both fresh and nostalgic. Ahead of the 6th of March arrival of the full-length project 'Strictly 4 The Scythe' via Loma Vista Recordings, the collective has dropped its eponymous title track, featuring heavy-hitting contributions from TiaCorine and Ferg.
Following on from the BNYX-produced 'Lit Effect', this new single is a gritty, high-energy cut that leans into scratched production and an addictive hook. It’s a track built on momentum, born from a night of high stakes and creative breakthroughs. Reflecting on the studio session, Ferg shares: “I was on one when we created this song, it was the night of my first art show… Taking the energy from the success of my show back to the booth where there was more energy with The Scythe created not only a monster of an anthem, but a moment in history!”
The track also highlights Curry’s knack for pushing his collaborators into new sonic territories. For TiaCorine, the process required a leap of faith regarding the song's direction. "Denzel really showed me the power of production and trust.. My verse was for a wholeeee different beat and Denzel is like you gotta start doing bigger sounds, trust me. So that’s what I did and that’s how we got 'The Scythe'."
Musically, 'Strictly 4 The Scythe' acts as a bridge between the distorted Memphis phonk of Curry’s early days and a polished, futuristic vision of Southern rap. While the project features a core rotation of Bktherula, Key Nyata, TiaCorine, and Ferg, Curry is quick to point out that this isn't a mere temporary collaboration, but a distinct entity. “The Scythe is a family and a group. We still have our respective solo careers, but when we come together, it's The Scythe,” he explains.
This flurry of activity comes amidst a massive year for Curry, who has recently shared stages with Fred again.. and joined Deftones on their UK tour. Between his guest spot on the new Knocked Loose single and this collective effort, Curry is cementing his status as hip-hop's most versatile connector.
'The Scythe' is available to stream on all major platforms now. Be sure to follow Denzel Curry and the rest of the collective on social media for updates ahead of the full project launch.
