Julia Cumming Announces Her Debut Solo Album And April Release

Julia Cumming has been a fixture of the New York City rock scene since she was a teenager, primarily known as the magnetic force at the helm of Sunflower Bean. After years of touring the world and shaping the sound of modern indie-rock, Cumming is ready to peel back the layers. Her debut solo record, titled simply 'Julia', is scheduled to arrive on 24 April via Partisan Records.

Joining a prestigious roster that includes the likes of IDLES, PJ Harvey, and Blondshell, Cumming isn't just rebranding; she’s undergoing a full creative rebirth. The move marks a shift from the raucous energy of her band towards a more intimate, self-assured space.

The first glimpse of this new chapter arrives with the single ‘My Life’, a track that replaces guitar fuzz with the resonant clarity of the piano. Accompanied by a cinematic video directed by the legendary Edgar Wright (of 'Baby Driver' and 'Scott Pilgrim' fame), the song serves as a bold declaration of autonomy.

Regarding the track’s origins, Cumming explains: “This song came after a period of intense pressure, the culmination of writing through the pandemic and the years spent in the rhythm of touring, recording, and trying to find my place within it all… Then something shifted. It was liberation, and I knew immediately it was the beginning of something new. It’s clear ‘My Life’ would open the album, because it’s the thesis. The seed that started everything.”

Recorded over six weeks in Los Angeles, the album features a heavy-hitting team including producer Chris Coady and collaborator Brian Robert Jones. The sonic palette draws from the golden age of American songwriting, nodding to legends like Joni Mitchell and Brian Wilson. Far from being a sombre affair, Cumming describes the project as a "joyous space for the misfits."

“I think we all try to play into the roles that other people put on us, or that we put on ourselves, in the hopes of being accepted. To use this music as a way out of those external narratives is my dream. One of my main goals with this record was for it to sound fun, not morose. It’s the ultimate anti-cool album. It’s a joyous space for the misfits, and in particular, an album for girls like me, the ones in middle school who never fit into a neat little box. I want this record to be a place where those girls can find solace. You don’t have to be who anyone wants you to be to be enough.”

You can stream the lead single ‘My Life’ on all major platforms now. Be sure to follow Julia Cumming on Instagram for more updates as we approach the April release date.
