Paisley indie rock outfit Radiola step boldly into the spotlight with their debut album, ‘Version of Life’, an ambitious, shape-shifting record that establishes them as one of Scotland’s most adventurous emerging guitar acts.
Fresh off a sold-out showcase for BBC Introducing at the iconic King Tut’s, the four-piece, built from the talents of Dave Muir, Colin Bryce, Johnny Patrick, and James 'Jimi' Cooper, have crafted an LP that absorbs a vast spectrum of influences and presents them with a unique creative flair.
Produced by Muir and mixed and mastered by Ross McGowan at Chime Studio, the record seamlessly weaves together driving indie rock, Americana textures, and experimental guitar noise. There are echoes of The Beatles' spirit of studio freedom alongside the alternative fuzz of Wilco and the contemporary post-punk urgency of Fontaines D.C.
From the start, Radiola refuse to stay in one lane. Opener 'This Song Is False' sets an unpredictable mood, while track 'Wild Things (Let Your Hair Down)' offers a layered, emotive atmosphere that feels gorgeously understated yet cleverly ornate. Elsewhere, 'The Smile I’m Hiding' delivers a vibrant pop heart, while 'Love is Broken' turns seductive and soulful. On 'This Is What You Get (For Falling Love)', the band pair confident guitar lines and relaxed swagger with a melodic sensibility reminiscent of Dawes, proving their experimental edge never sacrifices a good hook.
The album's centrepiece, the 13-minute title track, best showcases their adventurous spirit. Starting with a hushed sense of uncertainty amidst crackles and subtle noise, it steadily builds into a towering crescendo of droning textures before dissolving into a Stone Roses-inspired instrumental coda.
Closing track 'Tethered' brings the journey home with a grounded country-rock warmth. Lyrically, the album tackles love, mortality, and everyday existence through shifting perspectives, continually balancing simple songwriting with complex arrangements.
By taking the foundational elements of alternative rock and rewriting them on their own terms, Radiola have delivered a confident, highly compelling debut that rewards repeated listens.
