It is rare to find a musical project that arrives with the weight of a seasoned veteran whilst retaining the raw, jagged edge of a newcomer, but MAMA is far from your typical duo. Comprised of the Sydney-born, England-based author Antonella Gambotto-Burke and the multi-platinum producer Gavin Monaghan—famed for his work with the likes of Robert Plant and Editors—this outfit has staged a quiet coup of the indie world. Despite having played only five live shows, they recently found themselves on the 2026 Grammy Awards longlist for Best New Artist and Best Rock Album, a feat matched by triple longlisting at the MPG Awards.
Now, while still immersed in their second full-length record, the pair have veered into the electronic wilderness with ‘Greenlight Love (TAX THE RICH)’. This ‘Sonic Weapon Mix’ is a departure from the grit of their debut, ‘Apex Predators’, yet it carries the same uncompromising DNA. Written alongside British electronic artist Chris Budd, the track is a nearly seven-minute progressive house odyssey that feels like an unrelenting pulse. It is a work of rhythmic defiance, designed to cut through a period of global turbulence.
The motivation behind the release is fiercely transparent. As Gambotto-Burke puts it, “The intent behind the song is to bring hope to those who feel oppressed by the current climate of political insanity, cruelty, and exclusion. I am, like so many millions of others, exhausted by the self-serving duplicity of sociopaths and the avaricious. Fuck cruelty. Fuck racism. And, above all, fuck Trump and his grotesque toadies.”
Musically, the track is a shimmering beast. It balances vibrant pop sensibilities with a sprawling, cosmic energy reminiscent of New Order. The repetitive refrains and spiralling synths create a hypnotic atmosphere that never sags, proving that Gambotto-Burke’s transition from prose to melody—which began only three years ago—is nothing short of remarkable. Having already topped US indie charts, MAMA is proving that industry backing is secondary to a message that resonates. With a limited CD available now, and vinyl to follow, this is a movement gathering serious pace.
