Indiana-born newcomer Kelila Ranta has stepped into the spotlight with a debut that feels as weathered and storied as the barrooms that inspired it. Released on her own Telekinetic Recordings label, ‘princess of the dive’ is a compelling introduction to an artist who successfully bridges the gap between classic Midwestern grit and modern indie-pop shimmer. The track, produced by the acclaimed Jacob Blizard, avoids the polished sheen of typical pop debuts, opting instead for a textured, atmospheric arrangement that blends finger-picked acoustic melodies with a moody, Western-rock baritone electric guitar.
There is a grounded honesty to the track that stems from its origins. Reflecting on the track's inception, Ranta explains: "This song was the first song I had written in years at the time I produced it with Jacob and it was really inspired by my time working in the service industry. It was a time where I had sort of abandoned my passion for music and was just getting by and just had really lost a sense of direction. This created some deep insecurities that led me to project onto the people who would come into my bar.”
“I was so certain that they saw me as a loser, even though they probably weren't thinking about me much at all. This song helped me turn those negative thoughts into creative ones and completely changed my life. This was also my first collaboration with Jacob Blizard, who has since become a good friend and trusted collaborator."
The production captures this psychological tension perfectly. Ambient dive bar sounds drift through the mix, creating a unique soundscape where the line between a bartender’s reality and her imagination begins to fray. While the rockabilly undertones provide a sturdy backbone, it is the ornate vocal harmonies that truly elevate the piece, reminiscent of the indie songwriting sensibilities found in the work of Julia Jacklin.
While a full album isn’t slated until 2027, ‘princess of the dive’ serves as a bold opening statement. It is a vulnerable, stylish slice of indie-pop that suggests Ranta is no longer just watching from behind the bar but is ready to take centre stage.
