After teasing the release of their self-titled EP earlier this year, Melbourne’s CINEMA I-II have made good on their word. Released a few days ago, the EP delivers a neon-laced collection of tracks that take shape through psychedelic grooves, intricate vocoder work, and dazzling, undeniable melodies.
Built from the synth-obsessed minds of Jarvis Wilson-Short and Dean Johnson, ‘CINEMA I-II’ is an intricate blend of digital sounds and human emotions, with every track undercut by themes of relationships, remembrance, and longing. Throughout the EP, Jarvis and Dean embarked on a journey to push the boundaries of their vocoder use, aiming for a sound that was both instantly catchy and distantly ethereal.
The EP kicks off with 'Perfect Moment', an aptly titled track built on a foundation of crooning synths and delicate beats. It’s an infectious, uplifting opener, supercharged with electronic textures and modulated vocals that ebb and flow, creating an undeniably cinematic atmosphere. Following closely behind, 'Odium' carries this blissful vibe forward, but also hints more overtly at the emotional core of the pair’s songwriting. It’s a song that introduces a fascinating contrast, layering chanting vocals and with almost down-trodden lyrics. Through the neon-soaked adventure harks back to 80s sci-fi aesthetics, a synth-laden sounds, the lines of "work all day, slaving it away, never get ahead in this world" resound, a message all too common amplified by the bold musical sounds.
'Wild Life', one of two previous singles that came before the EP, showcases a different facet of their talent. Hypnotic beats mingle with a kick of static, driven percussion, while vocals phase between pulsating, synth-heavy melodies, demonstrating the duo's versatility and knack for crafting immersive soundscapes. 'Welcome to Track 4' is another early slice of synth-soaked pop, pushing ahead of the EP and garnering significant online buzz, even gracing the iconic RAGE. Its spacious arrangements and almost cosmic sound draw you in with each listen.
As you enter the closing tracks on the EP, 'Eyes Don't Lie' emerges as a buoyant and vibrant follow-up, bubbling with bright energy and digital shapes, before 'Shame' brings the EP to a close with a lilting, shimmering finish. They’re song that slowly ease off the EP’s momentum, creating a gradual, but no less enchanting end.
Despite the digital tones and modulated sounds, CINEMA I-II have managed to infuse their music with genuine heart and a sense of self. It’s a rare feat that is a testament to their songwriting ability, ensuring the blitz of beats and oscillating sounds don’t become too charmless or one-dimensional.
