Melbourne’s own Xylo Aria has always had a knack for weaving intricate digital textures with raw human vulnerability, but her latest offering, ‘Leaves of Summer’, might be her most poignant yet. Released globally on the 30th of January, the single is a masterclass in downtempo R&B that explores the sharp, paradoxical sting of feeling lonely while the world is in full bloom.
The track was born from a period of significant upheaval when the producer and vocalist relocated to London. While the British capital basked in seasonal warmth, Aria found herself navigating the disorienting fog of displacement. It is a sentiment many expatriates and wanderers will recognise—the "quiet envy" of watching established communities thrive while you remain on the periphery.
“I started writing this track in London years ago,” Xylo shares. “It came from those moments of sunshine and sadness when you’re in a beautiful place but feel like an outsider. It’s about that quiet ache of feeling like you don’t have a place within the surroundings.”
Sonically, the track is a lush, ambient dreamscape. Set in the melancholic key of A minor, it avoids the heavy-handed tropes of "sad girl pop" in favour of something more sophisticated. There is a hypnotic quality to the production, blending soulful vocal layers with electronic flourishes that mimic the fluttering of falling foliage. The refrain — “The leaves of summer, call me lonely, I’m falling down...” — acts as an emotional anchor, grounding the listener in Aria’s specific brand of nostalgia.
This release isn't just a standalone moment; it’s a vital piece of her Dissected Album Project. By drip-feeding her debut album, 'Dream', one track at a time, Aria is inviting her audience into the laboratory, offering a transparent look at her creative evolution and the stories behind the synthesisers.
Ultimately, ‘Leaves of Summer’ serves as a mirror for anyone who has ever felt "in-between" or out of sync with their environment. It’s a gorgeous, bittersweet reminder that even in our most isolated moments, there is a shared resonance in the longing for home.
“This is one of my favourite tracks I’ve made so far,” says Xylo. “It reminds me of where I’ve been and how far I’ve come. I hope it finds a place with those who’ve ever felt in-between.”
