The Radical Creative Evolution of Hip-Hop’s Master Style

Western New York has birthed a truly unique powerhouse in Amauri Manuel Rodriguez. Operating under the alias Master Style, is a self-made and self-styled artist looking to make his mark on his own terms. A musician, cartoonist, actor, comedian, and voice actor, he first fell in love with rhythm as a toddler when his mother gifted him a radio and a stack of CDs. Composing by age five and producing at seventeen, Amauri has spent eight years self-producing a raw, East Coast boom-bap discography.

While his early work prioritised gritty, provocative wordplay, Master Style is transitioning towards what he describes as "cinematic and like audio theatre." His ambition is to elevate hip-hop beyond the gangsta and fast-life trap themes that have dominated the sub-genre for two decades, aiming instead for "matured music with artistic, advanced and sophisticated vibes”. He’s an artist pushing to create a new wave, not just in sound design, but in lyrical content and character, while also preserving “the absolute rawest bases of Hip-Hop: confidence, self-expression, style, passion, originality and creativity."

This grand vision is anchored by a flurry of independent albums that have dropped throughout the year. His latest, ‘The Devil's Violinist’ marries raw rap lyricism with classical string arrangements, navigating through heavy tracks like ‘India’, ‘Iron Heart’, and the dramatic finale ‘Phantom of the Opera’. In stark contrast, his over-the-top debut album ‘Candy Man+’ relies on an AI-generated instrumental to deliver a colourful, raunchy, horror-inspired gangster comedy twist.

With other eccentric projects like ‘Yellow Fever’, ‘Rap Star’, and ‘Sex Machine’, Amauri is creating a seamless blend of real-life, introspective struggles with heavy, genre-blending beats.

Looking forward, his current catalogue serves as a teaser. Under the moniker of Master Style, Amauri plans to remaster his existing tracks and drop entirely fresh hip-hop and reggaeton records in early 2027. Strikingly, he is also heavily focused on accessibility; most of his tunes will be hosted for free personal and commercial use via royalty-free attribution on his online hub, DoubleRareWorld.com.
