Dallas experimental alt-pop duo Starleen are stepping out of the shadows of the algorithm to deliver something remarkably tangible. Their latest offering, ‘Evolution // Rebirth’, serves as a compelling, textured preview of their upcoming full-length album, marking a self-assured turning point for the project. Following their 2024 release, ‘Let Me Go’, the duo has spent years refining their sonic identity, arriving at a place that feels entirely their own.
Musically, the track relies on a striking contrast between digital coldness and human warmth. Ethereal, wispy vocal lines float above a bed of distorted, atmospheric notes, creating a hypnotic energy that shifts unexpectedly into glitchy, abrasive beats. It is a jarring combination at first listen, but the sonic friction works to mirror the song’s core thematic tension: the creeping influence of advanced technology versus the endurance of human expression. Rather than falling into standard electronic tropes, Starleen builds a layered, matrix-like world that feels genuinely urgent.
The single is heavily elevated by its cinematic accompaniment. Filmed near the Plaza of the Americas, the music video uses towering skyscrapers and torrential rain to frame a visually explosive narrative. Director Keanu Cordero and cinematographer Ryan Ritchie execute the concept brilliantly, capturing the mesmerising performance of Evelyn Phan, who anchors the narrative amid the urban downpour.
The track succeeds because it is driven by purpose rather than just bowing to industry trends. Starleen manages to express a deep sense of relief and optimism, creating a song the artfully articulates a narrative they have spent years trying to convey. Their creative philosophy serves as a direct challenge to the modern, stream-optimised music landscape.
As the duo state, “We hope other artists walk away with the idea that you don't have to appease the algorithm. Take risks, create the world, and most importantly, make the art you want to make. For the listeners, we hope they walk away with a mind that is more open to other forms of art that may not be getting pushed by the algorithms.”
