Joan & the Giants Deliver Emotional Resilience in ‘Mamma Don’t Cry’

Perth-based alt-pop heavyweights Joan & the Giants have stepped in the spotlight with their latest offering, ‘Mamma Don’t Cry’. Released today, the track is a masterclass in turning personal trauma into a universal anthem of survival.

The single centers on a pivotal, heart-wrenching moment in Fremantle between frontwoman Grace Newton-Wordsworth and her mother. “We’d gone for coffee in Fremantle, and that’s when I finally told her what I had been through,” Grace reflects. “She broke down in tears, heartbroken that I hadn’t told her while it was happening. But the truth is, when you’re in it, you don’t really tell anyone. It takes every ounce of strength just to stop excusing it—and even more to finally walk away.”

Musically, the track moves with a soaring grace, anchored by a co-production dream team of Joel Quartermain (G Flip) and Edwin White (Vance Joy). It’s a sonic metamorphosis that mirrors Grace’s own journey from the suffocating walls of an abusive relationship to the newfound safety of a sharehouse. Her signature vibrato shines when she sings about the simple, profound peace of living without fear: ‘They took my baggage and I cried on their shoulders / I’ve never known a love like this that comes with no conditions / I’ve never known safety or a house with no screaming.’

Despite the heavy origins, the song isn't a tragedy; it’s a celebration of the "butterfly" moment. “It came from a time when I discovered just how strong I really was—and I’m proud of that,” says Grace. “I felt like a butterfly leaving the cocoon, slowly finding freedom, peace, and a sense of self again.”

Having already supported titans like P!NK and The Fray, the band is now taking their magnetic energy across the pond. UK fans can catch them next month at The Great Escape Festival in Brighton, followed by some secret recording sessions and a massive August residency at Fitzroy’s Old Bar. If this single is any indication, Joan & the Giants are no longer just rising stars—they are a vital voice in the modern indie landscape.
