There is a specific kind of magic that occurs when a debut single arrives not as a tentative introduction, but as a fully realised artistic statement. Melbourne-based songwriter Hannah Potter has achieved exactly that with her new track, ‘Snow Day’. It is a hauntingly beautiful exploration of emotional stasis and the slow, often painful thawing that follows years of self-preservation.
Recorded live at The Rat Shack with the deft touch of producer Rob Muinos and mastered by the legendary Mikey Young, the single carries a raw, tactile energy. Potter’s vocal performance is the undeniable anchor here; it is restrained yet heavy with an undercurrent of hard-won wisdom. Backed by a delicate arrangement of meditative guitar, minimalist percussion, and a cello section that swells with cinematic melancholy, the track feels like a cold morning finally meeting the sun.
Potter’s path to this moment was paved by an eclectic musical education. Growing up in a home soundtracked by the likes of Nick Cave, Radiohead, and Billie Holiday, she was exposed to the darker corners of the human condition from a young age. She recalls the striking impact of hearing Cave’s ‘Murder Ballads’ at just four years old—an experience that forced an early confrontation with complexity and shadow. Later, at 13, discovering Cat Power’s ‘Names’ served as the catalyst that moved her from the audience to the instrument.
The emotional core of ‘Snow Day’ is rooted in a long period of internal disconnection. Potter shares: “From about 10 to 24 I was completely numb physically and emotionally. I wanted to connect and feel things, but my system was basically frozen. Part of the song is about looking back and wishing I had had the ability to have shown up differently for people who had tried to love me in the past. But also, being happy now that I’m not the person I used to be. I suppose the song is about wishing you could have savoured something a lot more than you did.”
After years spent sharpening her skills at open mic nights and supporting local acts, Potter solidified her sound by forming a full band in 2024. This new single marks the beginning of what promises to be a significant chapter for the Melbourne artist. ‘Snow Day’ is more than just a song; it is a vulnerable invitation to look back at our own past selves with both regret and a sense of relief.
