Covington Groove Find Their Flow on Soulful New Single ‘Greens’

There is a rare, magnetic quality to bands that emerge from the spontaneous combustion of a jam session. Covington Groove is exactly that kind of outfit. Born from a chance meeting at an open jam hosted by keyboardist Samuel Wyatt, the group, fleshed out by honorary fifth member and percussionist Kyle Perez, stumbled into a chemistry that most bands spend decades chasing. They created a sonic identity that sits comfortably at the intersection of gritty blues, funk-fuelled rhythms, and the expansive, improvisational spirit of the jam-band scene.

Their 2024 debut album arrived with a reputation already bolstered by some heavyweight credentials. Having shared stages with the likes of Mark Lettieri, Big Head Todd & The Monsters, and Umphrey’s McGee’s Kris Myers, the band has proven they have the technical chops to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the elite. Yet, for all their instrumental prowess, their music remains refreshingly unpretentious and deeply human.

One of the album’s standout tracks, ‘Greens’ perfectly encapsulates this balance. Lyrically, the song explores the heavy fog of modern disconnection—that restless search for a tether when the world feels like it’s spinning off its axis. While the title might invite a cheeky wink, the ‘Greens’ represents whatever personal sanctuary keeps you grounded. It’s a track that began with a single, unexpected line that caught the band off guard and sparked a fit of laughter, proving that the best art often starts with a moment of pure, unscripted joy.

Sonically, ‘Greens’ is a masterclass in texture. The band were particularly energised by the inclusion of the Hammond organ, which provides a rich, church-like warmth. It isn’t a gospel track in the traditional sense, but it certainly offers the same kind of cathartic emotional release. This collaborative spirit defines the entire record, which remarkably features five different drummers, lending a unique rhythmic flavour to other singles like ‘Gotta Move’ and ‘Elevate’.

Covington Groove isn't trying to reinvent the wheel; they are simply refining it with soul, grit, and an effortless cool. By blending old-school warmth with a modern edge, they’ve crafted a sound that feels like a long-lost favourite you’ve only just discovered.
