Brady has always had a way of finding the complicated emotions hiding inside relationships. Blending polished pop with the edge of ’90s alternative rock, the Boston-area artist has built her songwriting around real experiences of love, heartbreak and self-discovery. Her new single, 'The Night Before the Fire of Malibu', takes that honesty somewhere darker.
The track explores a relationship caught in an exhausting cycle. Both people know things aren't working, yet neither can quite walk away. There is anger and frustration in that push-and-pull, but also the uncomfortable recognition that sometimes the person hurting you can still be the one who feels most like home.
Behind the title is a real and surreal moment from Brady's life. After spending an evening in Malibu with her then-partner, the pair returned home and fought. The following day, fires began spreading through Malibu, eventually destroying their new friend's home and one of their favourite spots. While something devastating was unfolding around them, Brady found herself still consumed by a relationship that was falling apart in its own way.
That contradiction gives the song its weight. 'The Night Before the Fire of Malibu' carries a defiant, almost “fuck you” energy, but Brady doesn't position herself as completely innocent either. She recognises her own role in repeatedly returning to something she knew was hurting her.
Where the previous single 'Home for Summer' explored the comfort of returning to someone familiar, this release takes that idea into much messier territory. It's longing, resentment, and attachment colliding at once, capturing how difficult it can be to leave when love and damage have become impossible to separate.
