Melbourne’s BB Sabina have always operated in the delicate margins of sound, but their latest offering, ‘In Between’, feels like their most profound exploration of space yet. As the final teaser before the arrival of their highly anticipated full-length album, the single finds the trio—comprising founder Beth Uhe, bassist Warrick Newman, and drummer Travis Germaine—submerged in a lush, widescreen version of their signature atmospheric rock.
The track doesn’t just play; it drifts and swells, anchoring itself in a soundscape that manages to feel both gargantuan and intimate. Drawing on the textural depth of shoegaze and the patient, evolving structures of post-rock, ‘In Between’ is a study in contrasts. Heavy, distorted guitar layers are balanced by shimmering synths, creating a sonic environment that hovers between the shadows and the light.
The genesis of the song is as evocative as the music itself. While living in the Northern Territory, Uhe found inspiration during a journey from Mparntwe (Alice Springs) to Garramilla (Darwin). A quiet moment at a secluded waterhole provided the spark for the track’s striking metaphorical core.
“It captures a yearning for that weightless in-between space, like the surface of the water. Not fully immersed, yet not on the land - wanting to be comfortable with that place in between.”
This concept of existing in the "grey areas" permeates the entire track. It isn’t about finding a definitive resolution; rather, it’s about the beauty of the transition. Lyrically and sonically, the band embraces the fluidity of change—a theme that promises to be the heartbeat of their forthcoming record.
Technically, the single is a triumph of local collaboration. Recorded by Newman between The Aviary and Clamberdown Studios, the track was mixed by Andrew Huhtanen McEwan and given its final polish by Joe Carra at Crystal Mastering. The result is a song that feels lived-in and authentic, reflecting the tight-knit bond the trio has formed since Uhe relocated to Naarm in 2020.
‘In Between’ is out now on all major platforms. Ensure you're following BB Sabina on Instagram and Facebook for updates on their long-awaited album release and upcoming live dates.
