The neon-soaked intersection of technology and human isolation is a crowded space, but rarely does it feel as claustrophobic and captivating as it does on '22'. The latest eight-track offering from 2heart2crash—the moniker of Italian-born, San Francisco-based artist Alessio Grancini—is a 20-minute dive into the anxieties of the modern age, wrapped in a shimmering coat of new-wave and dark synth-pop.
Grancini’s journey to this point is as eclectic as his sound. Once the frontman of the band Edge in Italy, he swapped the mosh pits of his youth for the professional polish of Los Angeles and, eventually, the high-stakes pressure of a San Francisco "hacker house." It was within the confines of North Beach, surrounded by the frantic energy of startup founders, that '22' was born.
The record functions as a sonic bridge between Grancini’s background in architecture and his flair for visual storytelling. There is a structural integrity to these tracks; they are built on foundations of driving post-punk basslines and decorated with cold, digital textures. This isn't just music for the club; it’s music for the blue-light glow of a 3 AM scrolling session.
“This record is the result of unfiltered honesty,” says 2heart2crash. “It’s made up of the conversations I’ve had with myself along the way. Admitting my mistakes and the failures of communication that followed me helped me release some of the ghosts that kept reminding me how bad things once were.”
That vulnerability is most apparent when Grancini tackles our relationship with our devices. “My own sense of digital decay comes from how much time I spend immersed in media,” he explains. “No one knows you better than your devices. Texting, in particular, fascinates and disturbs me, not just its utility, but the anxieties, rhythms, and expectations it carries.”
Visually, the project is just as sharp, featuring contributions from creative technologist Zeo Zhang and VFX artist Cole Daly. This collaborative spirit extends to Grancini’s view of the tech world itself: “Artists and entrepreneurs are not so different. Both must believe in a vision long before anyone else does.”
'22' is a stark, stylish achievement that manages to be both deeply personal and universally relatable. It’s an essential listen for anyone who has ever felt lost in their own notifications.
