Sydney’s Lapse Turn Heartbreak into Catharsis on Stellar Debut EP

Emerging from Sydney’s vibrant indie-rock scene, four-piece outfit Lapse have dropped their highly anticipated debut EP, 'All It Took Was You'. Formed in late 2025, the band has wasted no time refining a sound that navigates the raw, often messy experiences of your twenties. Across four emotionally charged tracks, the release serves as a tender love letter to the grief of loving, channelling despair and heartache into driving guitar lines and a commanding rhythm section.

The project is anchored by the lead single 'October', a track exploring the guilt associated with setting boundaries and the fear of letting others down. It has already struck a chord, amassing over 11,000 streams, scoring airplay on Triple J, and catching the attention of presenter Ash McGregor. Following this is the grittier 'Hindsight', and 'Trilobites', which leans heavily into ethereal delay pedals, echoing the atmospheric rock of Spacey Jane, The 1975, and U2.

Discussing the lyrical direction, frontman Ryan Mulligan notes, “Each track explores a different aspect and moment of time in relationships. It isn’t trying to speak to one feeling, but blend the chaos that comes with heartbreak, disappointment, and finding ways to love life again. The aim has always been to write songs that can provide comfort to audiences, whether it’s to be able to sit with their feelings, or even to voice things they haven’t been able to articulate.”

This vulnerability reaches its peak on the EP closer, 'Goodbye, Polar Bear'. Gentle chords gradually make way for soaring strings and driving melodies, concluding with the titular lyric, "All it took was you". Drummer Brianna Goss highlights the collaborative spirit behind this sonic evolution: “We really enjoyed making this record together and as a new band it’s been exciting to build our sound from the ground up, while always thinking of ways to mould the music into something we love and are proud of.”

Lapse are translating this energy to the stage, having recently supported Charlie Pittman and Ghost Care. They are gearing up for a busy end to 2026, launching into a support slot for Civic Video at Metro Social on October 24. Mulligan is understandably thrilled, calling the opportunity, “So surreal! We’re big fans of Civic Video, so we can’t wait!”

'All It Took Was You' is available to stream across all major platforms right now. Be sure to check it out and follow Lapse on Instagram and TikTok to keep up with their latest announcements and tour dates.
