The alt-pop landscape is rarely this vulnerable. For the better part of eighteen months, Sydney-based producer and songwriter jnr. has been quietly assembling a sonic puzzle that piece by piece, has finally formed his debut EP, 'i’ve been looking for you my whole life'. Released today, 18 March, the project arrives not just as a collection of tracks, but as a cohesive, deeply personal correspondence.
The EP’s origins are rooted in a physical and emotional journey. What began as a series of sketches intended for his partner transformed into a profound interrogation of selfhood while jnr. was staying in her childhood home. The shift in environment acted as a mirror, forcing him to confront the complexities of his mixed-race identity and the distance he had previously kept from his own heritage.
“This EP started as love songs for my partner written in the country she was raised in. When I got there, I started to think a lot more about my relationship to my own culture and the reasons I didn’t want to face my own identity. Writing my first body of work, which could be some people’s first introduction to me, in a place so foreign to me felt quite ironic. These songs became love songs for both her and my inner child who’s still figuring out where he belongs.”
While he has spent much of the last year refining the sounds of Sydney’s rising stars—lending his production touch to Hevenshe (Jenna McDougall) and RAGEFLOWER—this solo effort sees jnr. stepping fully into the light. His knack for blending DIY grit with polished pop sensibilities has already earned him significant airtime on triple j and the Hit Network, but the EP offers a narrative depth that a single alone cannot capture.
Structured like a long-form letter, the record explores the friction between cultural longing and the comfort found in modern romance. It is an honest account of trying to reconcile where you come from with who you are becoming.
