The Dutch punk scene has always had a knack for producing music with a sharp, rebellious edge, and Groningen’s Real Farmer are the latest to prove that the northern provinces of the Netherlands are still a hotbed for independent grit. Ahead of their highly anticipated sophomore effort, the four-piece have unleashed their fifth single, ‘I.D.K.T.S (I Don't Know This Song)’, via Strap Originals.
Fresh from a premiere with Huw Stephens on BBC 6 Music, the track is a psychological whirlwind that bridges the gap between their DIY roots and a more expansive, experimental sound. To capture the track's frantic mental energy, the band collaborated with director Héctor Garcia Martin. The resulting video is an intimate, immersive affair that eschews big-budget gloss for raw human connection.
Reflecting on the process, Héctor noted: "What was most enjoyable for me about this shoot was that I felt among friends. It was just me and the three people in the video so I was able to be more immersive and empathetic in portraying the human story."
‘I.D.K.T.S’ acts as a final teaser for the upcoming album, ‘Two Wrongs Don’t Make A Right’, following a string of diverse singles that range from the dream-pop textures of ‘Run By Animals’ to the proto-punk energy of ‘Heart Out’. Recorded at Far Out Sound Studios in Rotterdam with engineer Niek van den Driesschen and mastered by the legendary Mikey Young, the record promises a polished yet potent evolution from their 2024 debut, ‘Compare What’s There’.
While the music is undeniably fast, the message is deeply considered. Frontman Jeroen Klootsema uses the record to dissect his own relationship with rebellion and community. "I grew up in a place where I had to bite back a lot, so I've become really good saying 'fuck you!'" Jeroen explains. "But I think when it comes to the bigger collective picture, it takes more than just one person kicking at things. It also requires knowing what you're doing it for. I'm constantly reframing that on this album: what do I believe? What is anarchy to me? What is a community to me? In these songs, we’re collectively trying to re-examine all those things as a band."
With a massive 23-date tour across Europe and the UK looming, Real Farmer are no longer just a local "dive bar" secret—they are a punk powerhouse in the making.
‘Two Wrongs Don’t Make A Right’ drops digitally on 1st May, with vinyl following on 29th May. Crank up the new single on all streaming platforms and keep up with the band today on Instagram and Facebook.
