Indie-folk heavyweights Mt. Joy have officially ushered in their next era, dropping the introspective new single ‘Is Joy Easy’. Arriving as a poignant follow-up to their 2025 standout album ‘Hope We Have Fun’, the track finds the Philadelphia-born quintet peeling back the layers of the human condition to ask a simple, yet radical, question about our emotional well-being.
Structurally unique, the song is a tale of two halves. It begins by navigating the jittery, familiar tension of anticipation—the kind that often fuels our deepest anxieties—before blossoming into a celebration of the present. It’s a sonic representation of that fragile threshold where fear finally gives way to release.
The track was forged in a period of intense personal upheaval for frontman Matt Quinn, who used the band’s internal mantra, "What if you’re great?", as a springboard for something more urgent. Faced with the weight of loss and a prolonged struggle with depression, Quinn shifted the perspective toward a different possibility: What if joy isn’t a trophy to be won, but a constant, quiet presence waiting to be noticed?
Speaking on the song’s origins, Quinn shared: “In what’s been a very difficult winter for me personally, through loss and a long battle with depression, this song arose as an attempt to use that mantra in a different way: What if joy is easy? What if it happens all the time? Less a destination and more the privilege to be then and there. The part right after the sweaty palms. Maybe it’s BS - but it brought us this song. Hope it brings some joy, the world could use it.”
This release follows a massive February for the band, which saw them win over Australian crowds with packed Laneway Festival sets and a string of sold-out sideshows. Now back in North America, the group is currently celebrating a decade together with an expansive 2026 tour. The run includes career-defining stops at Madison Square Garden and Red Rocks Amphitheatre, building on a banner year where they moved nearly 200,000 tickets across the US.
True to their ethos, Mt. Joy are continuing their mission of "impact-driven touring," donating $1 from every ticket sold to charity. To date, the band has raised over $700,000 for various organisations, proving that their communal spirit extends far beyond the stage lights.
