meg-mel Makes Her Striking Debut with ‘Everything Dramatic’

Raw, theatrical, and gloriously unhinged, Melbourne-based songwriter meg-mel steps squarely into the spotlight with her debut solo EP, ‘Everything Dramatic’. Known as the frontwoman of indie-alt outfit Burmese Bombshells, the new EP sees meg-mel taking her creative independence to fascinating new heights. Written within the tight confines of a small apartment alongside instrumental contributions from her sister, the five-track record captures the chaotic unravelling of human emotion in real time.

The EP functions as a hyperbolic mirror for meg-mel’s internal dialogue, transforming self-aware vulnerability into expansive alternative pop and indie rock, dotted with dramatic flourishes of jazz and musical theatre. The title track sets the standard with a cinematic, soulful foundation, dissecting the friction of avoidant attachment—craving intense connection while shying away from commitment. The momentum shifts into ‘Striptease Sunday’, where buoyant synths and driving guitars ground a candid, queer-focused narrative of raw desire.

‘Chlorofidelity’ picks up the tempo with bright, early-2000s indie melodies and a rapturous energy. Beneath its joyful exterior lies a clever juxtaposition: sunny instrumentation cleverly concealing dark, sharp lyrics that detail manic obsession and jealous fury. ‘Act II, Scene IV’ brings a vintage, Winehouse-esque soulfulness to the fold, grappling with the tension of desperately wanting to be understood while fearing judgement. Finally, ‘To Be Seen' strips away all production tricks, leaving behind a delicate piano ballad that exposes unvarnished insecurity.

Co-produced by Melbourne’s Jeremy Chua and Michael Bradshaw, ‘Everything Dramatic’ proves that navigating personal neuroses can yield brilliant art when you lean entirely into the chaos.
