Five years on from their last full-length record, Glasgow’s premier synth-pop outfits CHVRCHES have officially broken their silence. The trio—comprising Lauren Mayberry, Martin Doherty, and Iain Cook—have dropped 'Roses', a sharp, rock-driven anthem that marks their first fresh material in three years and serves as an unmistakable statement of intent.
Premiering as BBC Radio 1’s Hottest Record, 'Roses' arrives via Futures Music Group, home to artists like Lykke Li and Phantogram. Rather than leaning into the familiar glitzy hooks that defined their early years, the group pivots towards grit and bite. The single delivers a caustic critique of modern British society, taking aim at cultural rot and romanticised nostalgia. Mayberry’s vocal delivery carries a newly forged edge, sneering: "raise a glass to delusions of the good days of blood and wine; of pearls for swine."
The track builds to a chilling, dystopian conclusion with the spoken declaration: "If I may command your undivided attention, now we can start." It functions as a dramatic curtain-raiser for a era that promises to diverge sharply from the band's previous catalogue.
Reflecting on the recording process and their evolution, Mayberry explained: "This is the longest break we had ever taken between albums and when we got together to write new music, we wanted to really push ourselves and not be retreading ground we'd walked before."
"I really think we achieved that. It feels like the most coherent vision we've had as a band. We're excited to be back..."
Alongside the single, CHVRCHES have announced a pair of intimate secret gigs scheduled for this autumn. The trio will play a homecoming show in Glasgow on October 26th before heading south to London on October 29th. Fans can head over to the band’s official website to enter the ticket ballot.
