In a surprising, yet welcome, new collaboration, multi-platinum rockers Kings of Leon have just dropped their latest single, 'We're Onto Something', featuring none other than country sensation Zach Bryan. The track, a new chapter in an ongoing artistic relationship, was unveiled to a rapturous crowd at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park earlier this month, where Bryan joined the band for a surprise live debut.
The song is a masterclass in laid-back, reflective vibes, embodying the spirit of collaboration without overthinking. Kings of Leon frontman Caleb Followill shared his perspective on the track’s creation in a recent Instagram post, noting the band's shift towards a more fluid creative process. He described the song as “vibey, good times, not taking it too seriously,” a sentiment that shines through in every note. This relaxed approach, he revealed, often leads to their most cherished work, where "the demos end up being our favourite things because we’re all just finding our place.”
The accompanying music video pulls back the curtain on this newfound creative looseness. Featuring candid, behind-the-scenes tour footage, viewers get a glimpse of the journey, from the breathtaking scenery of Red Rocks Amphitheatre to the pulsating energy of the live performance in San Francisco. It's an intimate look at a band and an artist just enjoying the process, and the synergy is palpable.
This isn't the first time the two have shared the stage or the studio. Bryan, whose respect for Followill is evident, collaborated with him on the recent track 'Bowery', which he called the “honor of my life.” Their connection also saw them join Bruce Springsteen for a special rendition of "Atlantic City" at Bryan’s MetLife Stadium show in New Jersey.
With 'We're Onto Something' now in the wild via the band’s Love Tap Records, Kings of Leon are set to continue their packed touring schedule. Their UK leg kicks off today at the Come Together Festival in Newcastle, followed by shows in Norway, France, and Ireland, before they head back to the US for festival appearances at Ohana Fest and the Pilgrimage Music & Cultural Festival. It's a busy time for the rock veterans, but with new music and new collaborations, it's clear they are indeed onto something good.
