For over a decade, Julia Cumming has been the magnetic force at the centre of NYC’s Sunflower Bean, earning a reputation as a "genre shapeshifter with her soft yet tough-as-nails voice." But today marks the arrival of something entirely more personal. Stepping away from the collective roar of her band, Cumming has officially released her debut solo album, 'Julia', via Partisan Records—a project that feels less like a side quest and more like a necessary creative rebirth.
Coinciding with the album launch is the arrival of her latest single, ‘Fucking Closure’. It is a track that swims in the murky, uncomfortable waters of post-breakup logic. Featuring the atmospheric guitar work of Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner, the song is a slow-burn masterclass in melancholy, trading high-octane riffs for sharp, confessional intimacy.
Reflecting on the track’s emotional weight, Cumming says: “Getting closure always seems like the good idea, but sometimes the good idea isn’t what you actually want. Sometimes you just want the person back, all of them, their worst and their best. You miss when you shared in each other’s problems, and no amount of growth can change that wanting. Closure sets you free, but also solidifies what is gone.”
The accompanying music video, directed by Sophia Feuer, leans into this sense of cinematic longing. Inspired by the bittersweet aesthetic of Gwen Stefani’s ‘Cool’, the visuals aim to capture the warmth of a relationship before it fractured.
“The music and video come together to tell a story that contains so much more longing than the lyrics alone,” Cumming explains. “I reached out to Sophie Feurer, who I previously worked with on Sunflower Bean’s 'Nothing Romantic', because she has a gift in storytelling and making a music video feel like cinema.”
Fresh from a stunning performance of ‘My Life’ on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Cumming is ready to take this new chapter on the road. With a string of intimate dates across the UK, Europe, and the US kicking off next week, fans will finally get to witness this journey of autonomy and artistic freedom in the flesh.
