The fringes of regional New South Wales aren't just geography; they are a mood. Emerging singer-songwriter Jean Elliot taps directly into this lawless energy on her debut EP, ‘Butcher, Lover, Runner’. Rooted heavily in the dust and dense scrub of her Hawkesbury home, Elliot expands the crumbling tin roofs and rural pubs of her childhood into a dark, sprawling landscape known as the Devil’s Wilderness.
Rather than a simple collection of songs, this striking debut acts as a gritty concept record. The narrative maps a cinematic, high-stakes game of hunter and prey. Driven out of town by false accusations of attempted murder, the record's protagonist must fight for survival while fleeing a murderous brotherhood. Along the way, she aligns with a chaotic highwayman, culminating in a fierce showdown with the ringleader of the witch-hunt: The Butcher.
Sonically, the EP moves like a storm across the outback. Elliot deftly blends low-slung country murder ballads with distorted alternative rock and vulnerable acoustic moments. Her vocals act as the record's emotional anchor, swinging fiercely from the unbridled rage of ‘Wiretrap’ to the fragile, stripped-back grief of ‘Highwaymen’. It is a musical cocktail that feels heavily indebted to the visual unease of David Lynch and indie horror, while echoing the sonic DNA of Nick Cave, Ethel Cain, and Johnny Cash.
Reflecting on the deeper themes underpinning the narrative, Elliot explains:
“The genre of Australian gothic-noir inspired the lyricism and visuals. The ideas about witch-hunts and boy gangs are inspired by the attitudes of young people I have come across, with the hunter and prey metaphor running through the story symbolising cycles of violence, relationships and the cruelty/beauty of nature.”
Crafted in the home studio of Indigo Parker, who effortlessly balanced the mixing and mastering duties, ‘Butcher, Lover, Runner’ positions Jean Elliot as an incredibly compelling new voice in Australian alt-country.
