Interpol have broken their four-year silence by revealing details of their highly anticipated eighth studio album, 'This Mirror Weighs a Ton'. Scheduled to land on August 28, the record marks a notable milestone for the trio as their inaugural release under the Partisan Records banner. To celebrate the announcement, the band dropped a double-sided musical preview featuring the LP’s opening tracks: the atmospheric title track, ‘This Mirror Weighs a Ton’, and the sharp, energetic ‘See Out Loud’.
For this outing, the band chose to anchor themselves in familiar territory but with a vastly expanded blueprint. Setting up camp at producer Andrew Wyatt’s (ROSALÍA, Charli xcx) studio on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, the group recorded in their original home base for the first time in more than ten years. The resulting material, mixed by legendary producer David Fridmann (Sleater-Kinney, MGMT), broadens Interpol’s traditional landscape. Listeners will find woodwinds, strings, acoustic guitars, and intricate electronic textures woven seamlessly into the band's trademark rhythmic framework.
The two advance singles perfectly illustrate this creative evolution, acting as a vivid study in contrast. ‘This Mirror Weighs a Ton’ serves as a patient, slow-burning piece built around a fluid, warped bassline, ambient soundscapes, and echoing vocal treatments. It twists the band’s signature post-punk vocabulary into something surprisingly spacious and otherworldly.
Conversely, ‘See Out Loud’ delivers a direct jolt of energy. Packed with jagged guitars, precise drum patterns, and that unmistakable midnight atmosphere, the song represents classic Interpol territory. However, it still breaks new ground through intricate vocal layering and a rare lead vocal contribution from guitarist Daniel Kessler—marking his first prominent turn at the microphone since ‘PDA’ on their 2002 landmark debut, 'Turn On The Bright Lights'.
