Sydney-based British-Caribbean chanteuse Chanel Loren has returned with her first solo music since her critically acclaimed debut EP, 'BETWEEN2WORLDS'. The new single, ‘Autopilot’, is a dreamy and reflective R&B delight that showcases the artist's lyrical depth and captivating vocal performance.
Known for her confident and addictive alt-R&B sound, Chanel Loren first made waves in 2022 with a string of singles that quickly garnered support from major music outlets. Her earlier tracks, including ‘Playlist’, ‘Disappear’, and ‘Rollin’, positioned her as an exciting new voice in the genre. She was also named BBC Radio 1's Future Wave artist of the month for her collaboration with Arz on 'Some Other Time'.
Chanel’s musical journey has seen her supporting big names like Masego, IDK, and Sudan Archives, and she even secured a much-deserved ARIA Award nomination in 2023. This period of growth, although challenging with writer’s block and imposter syndrome, ultimately led to the creation of 'BETWEEN2WORLDS', an EP that truly embodied her artistic identity.
On ‘Autopilot’, Chanel’s ethereal vocals take centre stage, gliding effortlessly over a sparse but lush soundscape. Soft pads, delicate keys, and a subtle percussion lay the foundation for her introspective lyrics. According to the artist herself, the song is a call to reconnect with your inner voice. “'Autopilot' is about tuning into your inner voice because when you don’t, you end up living on autopilot,” she explains. The track was born out of a period of self-reflection, spurred by a trip to London that helped her break a cycle of simply "going through the motions.”
The creation of the track was a unique experience for Chanel. "I had so much fun creating 'Autopilot' with Dom Valentino and Jamie Rendle because the process was so different from my usual," she shares. She credits a creative "electric shock" from producer Dom Valentino for bringing the track to life and igniting a sense of excitement that mirrored her younger self.
‘Autopilot’ also arrives on the heels of another collaboration with American rapper Kota the Friend on his track ‘Sunday In Brooklyn’, marking their second time working together since he featured on her 'BETWEEN2WORLDS' lead single, ‘Carelessly Doomed’. With her new single, Chanel Loren once again demonstrates her ability to craft music that is both sonically beautiful and emotionally resonant, kicking off what promises to be an exciting new chapter.
