Brisbane’s finest purveyors of heart-on-sleeve alternative rock, Bad Neighbour, are back to tug at our heartstrings with their latest single, ‘Mean Faces’. The track serves as a poignant teaser for their highly anticipated sophomore album, ‘Burns From The X-rays’, which is slated for release on Friday, 5th of June via the champion of sad punks, Ninth Life Records.
Since emerging from the sunny streets of Meanjin, the quartet—comprised of Cooper Riley, Zoe Middleton, Liam Sumner, and Jack Parkes—has built a reputation for a sound that is as gritty as it is gorgeous. Drawing inspiration from the raw energy of modern emo titans like PUP, Modern Baseball, and The Menzingers, the band has spent the last few years evolving from local favourites into a national touring force. Having shared stages with everyone from The Smith Street Band to international heavyweights like Hot Mulligan and Spanish Love Songs, Bad Neighbour have refined a sonic identity that feels both nostalgic and urgently fresh.
‘Mean Faces’ is a masterclass in the band's signature style: a landscape of overdriven guitars and emotive storytelling that builds into soaring, cathartic crescendos. It’s a track that looks inward, tackling those shadow versions of ourselves that linger beneath the surface. Vocalist Cooper Riley explains:
"I wanted this song to be like a letter to myself... I love the line ‘it’s not gonna do what you need it to’, because sometimes we place unrealistic expectations on things, wanting them to happen the way we so badly want them to. But more often than not you get what you need instead of what you want."
The single follows previously released tracks ‘Rush Apart’, ‘Snarling’, and ‘I Can’t Look For You’, all of which point towards a more textured, darker indie-rock direction for the new record. For Riley, the album is a thematic bridge between the recklessness of youth and the daunting reality of growing up.
"In general, the album is one big love song. The good parts and the awful parts, but mainly it's about outgrowing a time and a place. I felt very uneasy about my life changing and growing older these past few years, and I wanted this record to be a reflection of that feeling."
