Prepare for an energetic musical experience as the Afro Peruvian New Trends Orchestra, led by artistic director Corina Bartra, heads to New York City. The ten-piece ensemble will be performing live at Silvana (300 W. 116th Street) on 12 November 2026.
Bartra, a visionary Peruvian singer and composer, has built an ambitious project that merges Afro-Peruvian idioms and Creole music with modern Latin jazz and Brazilian influences. Her multifaceted compositions provide a vibrant foundation for the orchestra, which features a rotating cast of top-tier musicians, including Bruce Williamson, Jonathan Saraga, Vince Cherico, and Perico Díaz. Because the performances are almost entirely instrumental, the talented band members are given plenty of freedom for bold, expressive soloing.
The group has steadily built a global following through tours across the US, Europe, and South America, pushing the traditional boundaries of Latin jazz. Their catalogue features two highly celebrated albums: ‘Uniting Beats’ and ‘Cosmic Synchronicities’. The orchestra's innovative approach even caught the attention of the 15th Independent Music Awards, where their track ‘El Dorado’ earned a well-deserved nomination.
Critical reception for the ensemble has been incredibly positive. Writing about ‘Uniting Beats’, Raul Da Gama from the Latin Jazz Network noted: "The music is compelling due to the splendid accord of the ensemble and the prodigious arrangements by Corina Bartra. Each piece uniquely represents Afro-Peruvian idioms with vibrant rhythms, lyrical compositions, and innovative repertoire. The Afro Peruvian New Trends Orchestra proves itself as a living force with this memorable 2017 album."
Reviewing ‘Cosmic Synchronicities’, Scott Yanow of L.A. Jazz Scene praised the group's sound as: "Modern and adventurous music consistently colorful and lively, combining Peruvian rhythms with creative jazz."
