In this exclusive interview, we delve deep into his journey from business to beats, his evolving sound, high-profile upcoming shows, and the deeply personal inspiration behind his heavy-hitting single, ‘The Darkness’.
Thank you so much for joining us! Looking back at your career, when did you first start making music? Where did it all begin, and what inspired you?
“Before music, my life was business. I spent about 18 years as an entrepreneur, building companies, working in marketing and constantly chasing the next level of success. For a long time, that was how I measured progress — growing the business, making more money and achieving the things I thought were supposed to make me happy. Eventually, I reached a point where I realised that success on paper and fulfilment weren't necessarily the same thing. I had built a life around business, but creatively I felt like there was something missing. Music became the place where I could express things that business never gave me an outlet for. I could take real experiences — relationships, pressure, ambition, pain, mistakes and everything I’d lived through — and turn them into something other people could connect with.”
“Once I started creating, it became more than something I enjoyed doing. I realized I wanted to build something meaningful with it. I took the same work ethic and determination that had driven me in business and put that energy into becoming an artist. That’s really where 5 Fires began. Business taught me how to build something from nothing, but music gave me a reason to build something that felt personal. Music became the place where I could actually say the things I wasn’t always able to explain in normal conversation. Pain, pressure, relationships, self-doubt, ambition — all of it could become a song.”
“Once I decided to pursue it, I went all in. I started recording constantly, performing anywhere I could, traveling between Canada and the U.S., and learning through experience. Eventually that led me to Miami and to working with Kevin Rudolf on my debut single, ‘Threw My Life Away’. Starting later has actually become part of my story. It taught me that there isn’t an expiration date on finding what you’re supposed to be doing. I spent a lot of my life building something successful; now I’m building something that actually means something to me.”
Can you tell us a bit about your latest single, ‘The Darkness’, and what it means to you?
“My latest release is ‘The Darkness’. The song is about the internal battles we carry that other people don’t always see. It’s about being pulled into a darker place and becoming so familiar with those feelings that part of you almost starts to accept them. The line “the darkness is stealing my soul, but I like it, I like it” really captures the heart of the record. It’s that contradiction of knowing something is pulling you down while still feeling drawn toward it. I wanted the song to be raw, heavy and honest. It deals with emotions that a lot of people experience but don’t necessarily know how to put into words. For me, “The Darkness” is about taking those feelings and turning them into something people can connect with and hopefully see themselves in.”
Were there specific experiences or musical styles that influenced you while writing it?
“’The Darkness’ was influenced more by real experiences and emotions than by any one artist. I wanted to capture what it feels like when you’re fighting something internally but, at the same time, you’ve lived with it for so long that it starts to feel familiar. A lot of the inspiration came from periods of pressure, ambition, relationships, setbacks and the constant push to keep moving forward even when things aren’t perfect behind the scenes.”
“The song came from recognising that everybody has some version of “the darkness” they deal with. Musically, I’ve always been drawn to both rock and hip-hop because of the raw energy and honesty those styles can have. With this record, I wanted that same intensity while keeping the message simple enough that anyone who has ever fought their own internal battles could hear it and immediately understand what I’m talking about.”
How did the songwriting process unfold for this track?
“’The Darkness’ came together in a way that felt almost like I was channelling it rather than writing it. I remember being in this headspace where I wasn’t really trying to create anything — I was just sitting with my thoughts, almost somewhere between being completely present and somewhere else entirely. Then the hook came to me: “the darkness is stealing my soul, but I like it, I like it.” It wasn’t something I sat down and tried to think of. It just appeared. I could hear the melody with the words, and I immediately knew I needed to capture it before that feeling disappeared.”
“Once I had the hook, the rest of the song felt like uncovering something that was already there. I followed the feeling instead of trying to force the writing. The production started taking on this dark, almost hypnotic energy, and the lyrics naturally followed it. There’s something mysterious about songwriting sometimes. You can spend hours searching for the right words and get nowhere, and then there are moments where a song almost finds you. ‘The Darkness’ was one of those moments for me.”
How would you describe the sonic evolution of 5 Fires on this release?
“’The Darkness’ is dark, melodic and heavy, bringing rock and hip-hop together in a way that feels natural to me. Those influences have always been part of my music, but the sound has become more defined over time. I’m trusting my instincts more now and creating music that feels unmistakably like 5 Fires.”
Is there a central theme or line that truly captures the soul of the track?
“The central theme of ‘The Darkness’ is learning to live with the darker parts of yourself instead of pretending they don’t exist. The hook, “the darkness is stealing my soul, but I like it, I like it,” captures that perfectly. It’s about that strange moment when the darkness stops feeling like the enemy and starts feeling like a part of you.”
What kind of reception has ‘The Darkness’ received so far?
“The response to ‘The Darkness’ has been really encouraging. What stands out most is hearing from people who genuinely connect with the song and tell me they understand the feeling behind it. One memorable moment was having the song selected for New Music Monday on B2 Internet Radio before the release. Seeing people respond to this darker side of my music has given me confidence that I’m moving in the right direction and that this sound is connecting with people.”
Where do you see yourself heading in the next few years, both musically and personally?
“My goal is to keep growing 5 Fires into something bigger than just the music. I want to perform on larger stages, collaborate with artists who inspire me and continue building a sound and identity that people immediately recognize. Personally, I want the freedom to spend my life creating, traveling and making music with people I respect. In the next few years, I want to look back and know that I took every opportunity I was given and turned it into something lasting.”
What can fans look forward to next on your schedule?
“There’s a lot coming next. On September 4, I’ll be performing at The Rap Arena in Miami, hosted by Rick Ross and Matty Ice. After that, I’m preparing to release ‘Raise It Up’ featuring Messenger Muzik, along with new visuals and more music already in the works.”
