With high-profile cosigns from the likes of Luke Combs, Bailey Zimmerman, and legendary producer John Shanks (Bon Jovi), the momentum surrounding this rising star is undeniable.
Having already warmed up crowds this year opening for Koe Wetzel and Lane Pittman across Australia, Vincent is currently bringing his electric energy to Nashville for a series of intimate gigs. Across social media, he has been teasing multiple tracks, building a massive online buzz ahead of dropping his highly anticipated debut EP with Columbia US later this month. We sat down with the man himself to chat about his genre-blurring sound, working with top-tier producers, and the inspiration behind his latest music.
Welcome, Billy! It is such a pleasure to chat with you today. To kick things off, your new single is called ‘The Story’, and it relies heavily on your signature emotionally honest, raw lyricism—what is the central story or personal experience that inspired this particular track, and what was it like turning that into a song?
"I wanted a song about hero’s journey, like The Odyssey or Star Wars where the hero embarks on a quest and is changed at the end. I knew when I came up with the riff that this song could carry that story. On a personal level it’s about finding your way, paying the price of your mistakes and coming out on the other side. It all came together really well. That was the first track I put drums and electric guitar on, so I’m very excited for the fans to get to know that side of my work."
You worked with producers Dopamine and Andy Seltzer on this release. How did that collaboration come together, and how did their production styles help shape the specific sound and energy of ‘The Story’?
"I was lucky to meet Dopamine earlier this year in Sydney. It was crazy to me that he worked with Kid LAROI, it’s a really unexpected combination – the hip-hop producer with the grunge guy – but he’s such a good dude and a weapon in the studio so it all came together quickly. Then once I signed with Columbia Records, we were on a trip in LA and they introduced me to Andy to finish the EP. I like to go into the studio with a plan and sound in mind, Dopamine and Andy were able to help me translate that into the finished song you hear today."
Your music is often described as a unique, genre-blurring blend of country, rock, and grunge. How do you balance those distinct musical worlds when you sit down to write, and how do you feel that mix reflects who you are as an artist?
"I try to push the barriers of the box of each genre. On the songs on this EP there is a natural crossover of grunge and country sounds that I think mostly happens because of my accent/twang than intentionally trying to fuse the genres. The more I write the more I want to push those limits – you can expect songs from me that have big grungy vocals with some clean 80s drums. Or a pop chorus with heavy rock riffs. I think people’s music tastes are so varied that we don’t have to live by genre rules anymore."
Looking at your musical influences, you span some incredible guitarists and vocalists like John Mayer, Chris Cornell, and The Goo Goo Dolls. In what ways do you see their impact showing up in your own guitar-forward sound and vocal delivery?
"I studied the way the greats before me sang and played and mimicked their techniques even though I didn’t really know the technical side of what I was doing. Learning from John Mayer or Eddie Vedder helped me to forge my own voice and delivery. Because I have this arsenal to pull from now, it helps me make interesting decisions when writing to put unexpected sounds and ideas together."
Social media played a massive role in launching your career, with millions of views on your performance clips and teasers. How does it feel to transition those songs from digital snippets on Instagram and TikTok into fully produced studio tracks for your upcoming EP?
"It’s always a little daunting when people hear and love a snippet from TikTok and then you give them a fully produced version. I hope those people can hear how authentic I tried to stay to those early snippets while pushing myself in the studio to create something I’m really proud of. I’m pumped for the people who’ve been following on this journey to keep hearing new music I’ve been cooking!"
You’ve earned some incredible cosigns from major industry figures like Luke Combs, Bailey Zimmerman, and John Shanks. What has that level of recognition and validation from peers you admire meant to you at this stage of your journey?
"It was really unexpected and insane. I opened TikTok one day to see a bunch of people on ‘Fly Away’ saying “bro Luke Combs commented!!!”. I had to actually scroll the comments to find it and then realised that Bailey Zimmerman and David Kushner had also left really nice comments. Noah Kahan reposted as well which was crazy. It was crazy validating for sure and helped show some decision-makers in the industry that there was something real connecting beyond just a viral video."
You recently shared the stage with Koe Wetzel and Lane Pittman across Australia, and now you’re heading to Nashville for some intimate gigs. How do you approach connecting with an audience differently when you are playing in local Australian pubs versus performing for crowds in the heart of Music City?
"I just live by the idea that there are no rules. I’m there to put on a show and give people a memorable experience, whether that’s a pub or an arena. It's where I get to let loose and show the world what I can really do and share these songs with the crowd."
With your first EP releasing through Columbia US this summer, this feels like a massive milestone moment. When listeners finally get to hear the project in full, what is the core message or feeling you hope they walk away with?
"I want people to feel the emotion and get hooked to the music not just through my voice but through the guitar and other elements of the song as well. Anyone who loves my music, I’m honoured."
With a highly anticipated debut EP dropping later this month and a calendar full of live dates, Billy Vincent is well on his way to becoming a household name.
