There is an undeniable confidence in delivering a grand artistic statement in under two minutes, yet that is precisely what Buffalo-based electronic producer XIMERMJ achieves on his latest instrumental single, ‘Headway’. Arriving late last month, just a week after his ‘Signature Search’ EP, the track acts as a cinematic bridge towards a forthcoming debut album.
Musically, the track pulls from a dark, rich palette of techno, breaks, and deep house, choosing to communicate entirely through mood rather than vocals. Built around a thumping, bass-heavy sound, XIMERMJ’s latest sees him diving into stark and wonderfully rich electronic textures. Glitching, steady, and calculated, it’s an evolving mix that handles its short runtime with surprising patience. Instead of feeling rushed, the layers of synth and percussion build a steady tension that rolls forward, accurately mimicking the progress implied by the title.
At just under two minutes in length, it’s a track that builds momentum without wavering, only to let you down with a sudden stop. That sense of anticipation and drive mirrors the traditional electronic payoff, but with a heightened sense of finality. ‘Headway’ succeeds because it treats electronic music as an open-ended narrative, leaving plenty of room for the listener's imagination to wander.
As an artist, XIMERMJ operates more like a visual architect than a standard club producer, treating sound like a filmmaker scoring a scene. Each release builds, taking from the last and amplifying the most potent moments.
Speaking openly, XIMERMJ shines a light on the shifting perspective that comes with a growing audience: “I think right now I am in an artist mindset of having eyes upon me now, and having to hold a certain standard from the threshold between these people and numbers to actually realising I have more than just music, there's a story line withheld within all my work but the more predominant I get with my music production and learning all of this, the more visuals I get, and I am so beyond thrilled and ready to prepare for the release of my debut album.”
