San Francisco’s Wave Wise have a history that stretches back much further than their 2022 debut. Doug French and Nick Semansky first locked into a rhythm in a middle school band class—Doug on percussion and Nick on French horn—before the lure of an hourly rehearsal space brought them back together years later. Since then, the duo has transitioned from a DIY outfit recording voice memos into a formidable two-piece capable of filling a room with sound that feels far larger than the sum of its parts.
Their latest offering, ‘Rise’, serves as a cinematic pivot from the garage-rock grit of the ‘White Hot’ EP. While the band’s foundation remains rooted in live-looped guitars and pulsing rhythms, there is a newfound breathability here. Working alongside engineer Jake Kremer and mastering expert Dan Millice, the pair have polished their aesthetic without scrubbing away the character that defined their early self-produced work.
