When life shatters your plans, the resulting detour often yields the most compelling art. On his debut nine-track record ‘Cocoon’, globe-trotting singer-songwriter Steve Stinson converts personal heartbreak, career shifts, and continents of displacement into a warm, deeply reflective collection of roots-music storytelling.
The origins of the project stem from a pivotal crossroad: Stinson walked away from a promising corporate career to move to Europe for love, only for the relationship to crumble before he could pack his bags. The lingering impact of that period feeds straight into the emotive title track, converting sudden grief into a broader meditation on personal evolution. Stinson avoids treating hardship as a simple tragedy, choosing instead to framework upheaval as a necessary step towards self-discovery.
That philosophy resonates throughout the entire record. Earlier release ‘Does Anyone Else’ captures his initial disillusionment with corporate ambition, setting the stage for ‘Evergreen’, a standout track celebrating the one element that remained steadfast through every shift: his devotion to making music. “Everybody's got to start somewhere,” Stinson says. “But ultimately, I think it really just starts with a change of perspective.”
Musically, Cocoon weaves a rich tapestry of Americana, folk, and country-tinged blues. Born in Oklahoma, raised between the US and Australia, and currently residing in Papua New Guinea, Stinson’s itinerant background infuses the track-list with a genuine sense of distance. On ‘Fly Away’, he explores his nomadic journey directly, examining how identity evolves beyond geographic borders. “It’s about discovering that home isn’t always a place,” he explains. “Sometimes it’s the person you become along the way.”
The album’s classic storytelling carries clear echoes of Bob Dylan and Fleetwood Mac, alongside the soaring piano dynamics of The Fray and the atmospheric textures of Coldplay. While a few mid-album tracks like ‘Make You Move’ and ‘The Ledger’ tread familiar singer-songwriter territory without drastically upending the roots-rock blueprint, any minor predictability is easily outweighed by the absolute sincerity on display. Cut after cut—including ‘Always On My Mind’, ‘Lost In The Tide’, and ‘New Reality’—the record captures an artist navigating the real distance between expectations and reality.
“I hope that the record achieves what its theme is, that hard work and consistency pay off in the long run,” Stinson notes. “Making music is fun, but it isn't easy or cheap either. There's some sacrifice that comes with it, and for me this is the first step.” He adds, “I hope that listeners find a new sound that they like. Something new is always nice. But I also hope that it hits home somewhere for them in a way that aligns with the themes of the album.”
By facing uncertainty head-on, Steve Stinson delivers a grounded, immensely comforting debut. To stay updated on his upcoming releases and tour announcements, be sure to drop him a follow across Spotify, Instagram, and Facebook.
