Queen Anne Deliver A Stark Reimagining Of Bowie's ‘Let's Dance’

Indie-pop duo Queen Anne has stepped boldly into the spotlight with their second standout single, a brooding and atmospheric cover of David Bowie's 1983 hit, ‘Let's Dance’. Made up of singer-songwriter Katie Silverman and writer/producer Sandy Chila, the American duo has taken a dance-floor anthem and turned it into a stark, cinematic soundscape that feels both familiar and eerily new.

While the original ‘Let's Dance’ stands tall as a jubilant, strutting ode to the night, Queen Anne’s version is a hushed, contemplative affair. It opens with the soft strum of an acoustic guitar, setting a solemn tone that is soon joined by Katie’s vocals. Her slightly distorted, ethereal delivery feels less like an invitation to a party and more like a whispered secret, adding a haunting quality that transforms the song’s essence.

The contrast between this tone and the surprising, but welcome rhythm that emerges is where the track truly shines. A galloping beat enters, bringing together a sweet, smoky blend of alt-pop sensibilities and avant-garde country that just works. It’s a stroke of creative genius, turning the track into a bewitching, swaying motion that is as introspective as it is danceable.

Speaking about the choice of song, Katie explained, "When I was younger, Bowie was a huge influence, not just his music but in his persona, and his visuals, and just the whole vibe. I really wanted to cover one of his songs, both to pay homage and as an excuse to listen to them over and over. I picked 'Let’s Dance' because there’s something so fervent, so this-is-our-last-chance about that song, and because I already owned a pair of red shoes."

Backed by this personal connection, Queen Anne’s reimagined version is bolstered perfectly, bringing depth to the track that stops it from being a hollow cover. Throughout, Queen Anne navigates the delicate balance of paying homage while forging their own path, taking on the difficult task of turning a classic on its head.

A track infused with the duo’s melancholic, postmodern twist is a testament to their creative talent. With their debut single ‘Real Enough’ and now this stunning reinterpretation, Queen Anne is quickly establishing itself as a duo to watch.
