Seattle-based Filipino-American composer Pol Sembrano has successfully reframed his musical identity on his brilliant self-titled debut, shifting from the structured confines of classical piano to the expansive, neon-lit horizons of electronic music. The result is a highly focused nine-track collection that borrows from the best of ‘80s new wave while maintaining a sharp footing in the current zeitgeist. Impeccably polished by Canadian producer Casey Lewis, the record manages a rare feat: it delivers heavy, club-ready hooks that pulse with absolute emotional vulnerability.
Rather than relying on empty nostalgia, Sembrano infuses his vintage electronic textures with profound personal history. His infectious optimism is shaped by world travel across 57 countries and, most notably, surviving the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. This life-altering event underpins the album's core message of radical acceptance, gratitude, and resilience.
The record moves seamlessly between dancefloor liberation and existential introspection. Lead single ‘Anywhere’ serves as an adventurous, driving anthem to global exploration. Sembrano explains the track's origins: “I wrote the song 'Anywhere' as an homage to world travel, as I have been visiting different nations regularly for the past few decades. Setting foot in a new country and experiencing its culture, sights, cuisine and people is, for me, an unforgettable experience. My father, before he passed, mentioned that travelling is the best education and one should not limit oneself to a predictable comfort zone or personal confines. It is especially worthwhile to travel with someone whom you love since both are creating long-lasting memories to be shared.”
Equally compelling is the second single, ‘Open Mind’, which layers intricate, pulsating orchestrations beneath a message of social solidarity. Regarding the track's compassionate stance, Sembrano notes: “’Open Mind’ is about accepting people for who they are and supporting them if they are suffering from any sort of persecution.”
Throughout the album, Sembrano handles vocals, instrumentation, and programming, crafting a distinctively personal sonic imprint. Describing his approach to the record's sophisticated arrangements, he adds: “My self-titled debut album is lyrically written from personal experience. Themes include the joy of escapism, isolation, unrequited love, death and hope. Musically, the songs are melodic, hook-driven, danceable and thought-provoking. Listeners may be able to connect with the music and apply it to their personal lives.”
He further elaborates on his signature arrangements: “I have always been confident in myself as a musician and by writing, producing, arranging and performing on my own. I am a classically trained pianist, but I am also inspired by other genres of music, in this case electronic/dance music. This provides a whole new dimension in my music persona, as I do not wish to be categorised as “this or that type of artist”. The music is hook-driven with melodies that intertwine, especially at the end. This enables the listener to hear subtle nuances which make for an interesting listening experience.”
Tracks like ‘Pedestal’ and ‘On That Day’ round out a beautifully balanced, thought-provoking party vibe that rewards closer listening. By channelling hard-won wisdom into irresistible electronic pop, Sembrano has created an honest, uplifting escape from self-judgement.
