Melbourne blues outfit Phil Coyne and The Wayward Aces have returned to the fray with a fiery spin on Sonny Boy Williamson II’s timeless track, ‘Checking Up On My Baby’. Serving as the lead single for their forthcoming album ‘White Knuckle Time’, the release dropped right as the four-piece hit the stage at the Echuca Winter Blues Festival 2026, setting an exceptionally high bar for what is to follow.
Rather than offering a carbon-copy tribute, the band tackle the song with genuine reverence alongside a fresh, full-throttle energy. The track lopes forward with absolute authority, effortlessly capturing the sweaty spirit of a packed weekend pub. Front and centre, Phil lets his harmonica roar with a brassy intensity that demands immediate attention. His vocal delivery feels equally raw and assured, anchored by a blistering tone that elevates the whole arrangement.
As Phil himself puts it, "I love the feel of this tune, it lopes along unhurried but completely solid! The bottom end is absolutely indomitable despite sniping from Morgans’ guitar, and the harp's right up in front - my little vintage amp's absolutely humming — all the electrons are leaping from the cathode - it's red hot."
That indomitable rhythm section comes courtesy of veteran bassist Dale ‘Gloveboy’ Lindrea and drummer Will Harris, who together lock into an infectious, swinging groove that gives the track its irresistible swagger. Morgan Klose’s guitar work adds a razor-sharp edge, dancing around the vocals and leaving plenty of breathing room for the instruments to shine. While traditionalists might occasionally miss the sparse, dusty minimalism of the 1960s original, the Aces compensate with pure momentum and tight musicianship. It is warm, buoyant, and tailor-made to get bodies moving on the dance floor.
If this first taste is anything to go by, ‘White Knuckle Time’ promises to be an absolute powerhouse of a record. Phil Coyne and The Wayward Aces have proven once again why they remain one of the finest blues outfits in the country—taking deep Chicago roots and revitalising them with distinct Australian grit.
