One Time Mountain Strike Gold With High-Octane Second Outing

Boston quartet One Time Mountain have weathered quite a few storms since their 2012 inception, but their second full-length record, 'You Are Here', proves that internal transformation can yield spectacular sonic results. Having nearly disbanded during the pandemic, the New England outfit, comprising Brian Murphy, Ethan Garman, Zach Rizzo, and Alec Smith, has returned with a revitalised focus.

The resulting collection is an unapologetic celebration of classic rock-and-roll architecture infused with a sharp, contemporary grit. Right from the opening salvos of ‘Fly On By’, the album establishes itself as a high-energy frenzy. In an era where digital perfection and automated melodies threaten to oversaturate the musical landscape, One Time Mountain have intentionally steered their ship in the opposite direction.

The production is deliberately thick and physical; notably, the entire record’s rhythm guitars were quad-tracked. This intense production process pays off dividends, wrapping the listener in a massive wall of sound that mirrors the swagger of Mötley Crüe and AC/DC while maintaining the soulful, blues-drenched depth of The Black Crowes.

The track list boasts some genuinely inspired collaborations that elevate the record beyond a standard club-rock affair. Hardline frontman Johnny Gioeli lends his powerhouse vocals to the driving anthem ‘How The West Was Won’, injecting a classic arena-rock flair. Meanwhile, the band recruits Swedish vocalist Robin Red Eriksson for ‘Black Flag’. Eriksson, known for his work with melodic rock outfit Degreed and a memorable 2008 run on Sweden’s version of Idol, provides a brilliant vocal counterpoint that gives the track a distinct European melodic edge.

While the relentless, stadium-sized energy occasionally leaves little room for sonic breath, the sheer authenticity of the performances carries the day. The record closes with the manic momentum of ‘Goin' Crazy’, cementing the album as a testament to human chemistry. It is an assertive declaration of identity from a band that refuses to rely on studio trickery. 'You Are Here' stands on its own: real instruments, real people, real energy.
