Bradford, Pennsylvania outfit Marshmellow Overcoat have spent over a decade honing a distinct brand of rootsy classic rock, and their latest ten-track collection, ‘Beat a Dead Horse’, stands as their most complete effort to date.
Formed in 2008 by singer-songwriter Tyler Calkins, the group—featuring Calkins alongside bassist Dave Verbocy, guitarist Alan Hancock, and drummer Anthony Cavallaro—skilfully weaves sixties, seventies, and nineties influences into a polished contemporary package. Recorded across Buffalo’s GCR Audio, Mammoth Recording Studios, and Calkins’s home studio, the album sounds wonderfully rich, benefiting from crisp engineering by Michael Bridges and Joey Bastian alongside mixing and mastering from Brad Lauchert.
Opening track and lead single ‘Wrote a Letter to You’ sets a high standard from the off, anchoring its warm arrangement around a majestic Yamaha grand piano. Carrying deep personal weight, Calkins finished the piece on the day a close friend passed away, using the instrument to reach out one final time, while its poignant lyrics simultaneously double as an ode to his wife. The song draws naturally upon the spirit of John Lennon, Billy Joel, and Warren Zevon without feeling overly indebted to them.
Further down the track list, ‘Please Don’t Go’ injects a welcome burst of adrenaline, driving forward with a crunchy guitar riff that quickly marks it out as one of the album's liveliest moments. Bandmates Verbocy, Hancock, and Cavallaro provide tight, spirited momentum throughout, ensuring the record's rhythmic foundation never wavers.
While the album occasionally leans into well-trodden retro structures during its middle stretch, any minor lulls are swiftly swept aside when the group hit their stride. Highlights such as ‘Walkin' Tonight’ and ‘Castles They Live In’ showcase the band’s knack for memorable hooks and soaring melodies, proving that their formidable reputation across Western Pennsylvania and New York State is thoroughly well deserved. The record eventually culminates with ‘Strumming Up the River’, an epic finale that leaves the listener on an expansive, driving high.
Supported by striking artwork from Kevin Kurecki, ‘Beat a Dead Horse’ is a thoroughly engaging release that successfully honours traditional rock songwriting while maintaining a fresh, modern edge.
