Makaio Huizar Reinvents Bedroom Pop On Electric New Single ‘CLOSET’

Nineteen-year-old Arizona producer and singer-songwriter Makaio Huizar is tearing up his own rulebook. Having already amassed over 365,000 streams with his introspective, acoustic-tinted bedroom pop, Makaio’s latest offering ‘CLOSET’ marks a bold, kinetic shift in artistic direction. Ditching the muted folk arrangements of his earlier work, this self-produced track merges experimental electronic textures with sharp alternative pop sensibilities, delivering his most ambitious moment yet.

Lyrically, ‘CLOSET’ dives headfirst into the delicate friction of hidden relationships. Written from an LGBTQ+ perspective, the track translates the quiet ache of being somebody’s secret into an accessible emotional narrative. Makaio uses the central metaphor of a favoured garment left hanging out of sight to depict a lover who is cherished behind closed doors but hidden from the real world.

As Makaio puts it, “’CLOSET’ is about the experience of loving someone who keeps you hidden. Written from an LGBTQ+ perspective, it explores being wanted publicly but not acknowledged publicly. I use the metaphor of being someone's favourite shirt in their closet, something they're always able to reach for when they want it, but something they refuse to wear in public.”

What makes the release so compelling is the synergy between its thematic weight and its sonic architecture. The production mirrors the emotional trajectory of the narrative, starting hushed and hesitant before steadily stacking synthesized elements. Piano lines, performed by guest collaborator OwenWho, anchor the early verses, giving Makaio’s vocals space to breathe. However, rather than remaining trapped in brooding melancholy, the track deliberately holds back its power until the final third. Near three minutes in, the tension snaps open into a soaring, euphoric bridge that pushes Makaio’s vocal range to its limit.

This sonic transition reflects the artist's own creative risk-taking. "The lyrics talk about being someone's “experiment,” while ‘CLOSET’ itself became an experiment for me as I explored a sound that was completely different from what I've previously released," notes Makaio.

With ‘CLOSET’ Makaio has delivered a refined, genre-bending track that expands his artistic boundaries while keeping his signature honesty intact. Set for release on October 16th, but you can pre-save it now on Spotify and Apple Music.
