Sydney alt-quartet LUCIDBLOOM have carved out a hauntingly gorgeous slice of shoegaze-tinted dream-pop with their latest offering, ‘Fever Dream’. Serving as the lead taste of their forthcoming sophomore EP, the track finds the group—sisters Jennifer and Katrina Noorbergen, drummer Astrid Holz, and guitarist Tom Haeusler—navigating the disorienting, weightless terrain of grief with remarkable delicacy and sonic heft.
Conceived and arranged during an intense single-day writing session inside a Blue Mountains warehouse, the song bears the raw, instinctual heartbeat of its origin. It sits comfortably in the shadowy space between reality and memory, leaning into dynamic shifts that range from dense, crushing textures to soaring, celestial hooks.
Drawing subtle cues from artists like Warpaint and Radiohead, the band balances intricate, layered vocal harmonies with expansive guitars that push the soundscape out towards technicolour horizons. While the mix occasionally lets its lushness blur the rhythmic edge of the lower end, the track’s sheer emotional pull keeps everything firmly grounded.
Central to the single’s strength is its lyrical core, which reframes absolute loss not just as an ending, but as a shifting transformation. "’Fever Dream’ is about losing someone you love, and navigating the liminal spaces between darkness and light, loss and hope. And holding onto ways to connect with love that doesn’t disappear and finds new ways to exist in ways we can’t always comprehend," explains Jennifer Noorbergen. She describes the emotional landscape as “like living in a fever dream, where nothing quite makes sense, where you’ve lost your gravity, and everything feels altered. At the same time, it’s about discovering unexpected beauty in that experience, where you find them in the universe around you - in dreams, in technicolour horizons, in pivotal moments and faces in a crowd.”
Visually, the release is paired with nostalgic handheld film work and surrealist collages crafted by artist Michaela Parry, mirroring the song's tension between grounded grief and transcendent hope. Having spent over a decade honing their crafts across various Australian and international projects, the four members sound remarkably cohesive here, turning personal upheaval into an expansive, cathartic pop moment.
