It's fair to say that Zachary Chacon, the Lawndale, CA resident behind the wonderfully absurd moniker Hollywood Video Game Kill-Bot, isn't interested in making music you can easily file away. His latest offering, the single ‘Wild Crazy’, is pure sonic escapism, confirming his position as one of the most excitingly unconventional figures operating in experimental electronic rock today.
Undercutting his experimental style, Zachary plays all the instruments except the drums, which are sampled. Driven by Logic Pro X and fuelled by 80s video game music, he creates a unique space that he describes as “experimental electronic rock music.”
True to form, his new single, ‘Wild Crazy’, is an immediately arresting track built on a tireless cascade of 8-bit sounds. It’s a song with a foundation of digital freneticism that truly embodies its name. The track offers a kaleidoscopic sound that, refusing to settle into a predictable groove, takes the listener on a jarring, exhilarating ride. It’s a track that possesses an almost rambling quality, where disparate tones and melodies collide relentlessly, barely tethered by steady digital beats and subtle bass tones.
This approach is what gives the music its unique character—the feeling that a classic Nintendo cartridge is short-circuiting in real time, yet still delivering a perfectly organised, albeit chaotic, musical statement. The result is a genuine sonic whirlwind. It’s an unfocused drive that veers sharply between light, celestial moments that float, twanging tones, and then an all-out assault of 8 Bit Power Synthesiser and wild creative imaginings.
While many artists draw influence from retro gaming, through his project, Zachary doesn’t just sample the past; he reconstructs it into something fresh and aggressively modern. This isn’t background noise but a daring, abrasive, and ultimately addictive piece of work that demands you pay attention. It’s a chaotic labour of love and one of the most distinctive tracks we’ve heard this year.
