Hash Cabbage Reimagines the Spectrum with ‘Color Of Blue’

Emerging from the humid, creative melting pot of New Orleans, Hash Cabbage has spent nearly a decade defying the constraints of a single genre. Since 2017, the project—steered by the prolific songwriting of frontman and modern-day troubadour Kenny Jefferson—has skirted the boundaries of roots music, world rhythms, and cosmic Americana. With four full-length albums already under their belt and a reputation for live sets drenched in improvisational psychedelia, the band is now gearing up for their next chapter: the upcoming studio album, ‘Argan’, slated for a 2026 release.

Their latest offering, ‘Color Of Blue’, serves as the penultimate single from the new record and finds the group retreating into the legendary Dockside Studios in Maurice, Louisiana. The result is a track that breathes with the warm, organic textures of the bayou, trading the band's typical "world music" explorations for a deep dive into southern soul and guitar-heavy rock. It is a song of layers, both musically and conceptually, featuring cascading guitar harmonies and the weeping, atmospheric touch of pedal steel that anchors the track in a timeless southern tradition.

The song’s inception was anything but hurried. Jefferson describes a meticulous, slow-burning creative process: "’Color of Blue’ like a lot of Hash Cabbage songs, was written over a period of years in various stages of development. I’ll often write a song down on paper and get a rough recording. Then I’ll leave it on the shelf, for months if not years. Then I’ll come back to it and see how I feel about it, make some adjustments, and then repeat the same process. There’s no telling how long this will take until I feel the song has marinated long enough. Some songs happen quickly, but ‘Color of Blue’ was a long haul process.”

That "marinated" quality is evident in the track's lyrical depth, which seeks to reclaim a shade often relegated to sadness. Jefferson notes, "What emotions do colors inspire? Blue is a color often associated in human terms with melancholia, but ‘Color of Blue’ challenges this assumption. Blue can mean hope, love, aspiration or even meditation. It’s all in the eyes of the beholder."

By blending these philosophical reflections with rich, soulful arrangements, Hash Cabbage has delivered a single that feels as vibrant and multifaceted as the hue it celebrates. To keep up to date with Hash Cabbage on the road to ‘Argan’, join them on Facebook and Instagram.
