After a five-year hiatus, Ditchbird, the moniker of Minnesota’s own Tony Petersen, is back with a roar that feels less like a comeback and more like a homecoming. His upcoming album, ‘Diamonds’, is a fine-tuned realisation of a vision that began in the backseat of his father's car in Cloquet. Having cut his teeth on the road with the likes of Social Animals and opening for heavyweights like Dashboard Confessional, Petersen has swapped the anthemic polish of his past for something far more visceral.
Ditchbird is the sound of the Midwest with its sleeves rolled up: a reckless, real blend of backroad Americana and the kind of punk-laced grit you only find in the corner of a sweat-soaked dive bar. The two lead singles offer a brilliant study in contrasts, showcasing the different sides that shine throughout the album. ‘I’m A Wreck (But I Love You)’ introduces itself with a guitar riff that is as smooth as it is cheeky, creating a hypnotic groove that feels like a 2:00 AM internal monologue. It’s an honest, slightly messy admission of human imperfection.
On the flip side, ‘I Am Going To Explode’ trades the sultry groove for a rhythmic, bass-driven bounce. It’s a high-pressure valve of a song that perfectly captures the modern irony of claiming “everything is fine” while the internal fuse is rapidly shortening. The guitars provide a thick, textured backdrop to the mounting tension of the lyrics, making the repeated refrain of the title feel like an inevitable eruption.
Beyond the singles, the album breathes through heartfelt, rustic gems like ‘B Side’, ‘Good Boy’, and ‘Late Bloom’. These tracks lean into a raw, unvarnished sound that highlights Petersen’s growth as a songwriter.
