There is a gritty assurance that only comes from years spent working the independent music circuit, and frontman Dave Hunter has it in spades. After spending a decade steering the critically lauded Alt-country outfit The Molenes through radio charts and television soundtracks, the Northeast singer-songwriter has returned with a formidable new collective.
Dropping on 7 July via Happy Little Records, ‘Tamp That Fever Down’ is the debut offering from Dave Hunter and the Seven Hundred, and it instantly establishes itself as a remarkably assured introduction. Rather than starting entirely from scratch, the project brilliantly bridges the past and the present, reinterpreting choice cuts from The Molenes' back catalogue alongside fresh material that pushes their amped-up Americana template into darker, more compelling territory.
Across the eleven tracks, the band stirs a crooked gumbo equal parts mournful reflection, brazen feist, and cool resignation. It is a wonderfully untethered sonic blend, leaning heavily into a twilight world of haunted roots rock and hypnotic country rhythms. Musically, the record behaves like a deceptively calm uprising, capturing the tense, electric atmosphere right before a storm breaks. Hunter’s vocals carry a defiant, weather-beaten croon, delivering hard-won wisdom and cold truths that find an ideal counterweight in the instrumentation. The guitar lines are exceptionally sharp, trading blows with a locked-in rhythm section described as being “tight as a constrictor knot.”
While the lyrical themes frequently wander through late-night regrets and small-town friction, the sheer musicality keeps the mood from ever sinking into pure despondency. Instead, the rich production layers give these songs an infectious energy, making the album just as suited for a rowdy, whiskey-soaked all-nighter as it is for quiet, solitary listening. Speaking on the evolution of his craft, Hunter noted that the record is the culmination of "crowning two decades of acclaimed music making in the amped-Americana vein, Dave Hunter is confident this is his best album yet, displaying maturity in the songwriting and new levels of musicality in the playing and production." It is difficult to argue with his assessment.
‘Tamp That Fever Down’ manages to honour Hunter's musical lineage while feeling entirely vital and contemporary, offering a balanced, deeply satisfying collection that signals a thrilling new chapter.
