There are some artists whose work is so rooted in a sense of place and heritage that it feels like a genuine act of storytelling. This is the case with Birdz and Fred Leone, two proud Butchulla artists who have just dropped their powerful six-track EP, 'GIRA'. The title, meaning 'fire' in their native Butchulla language, is a perfect summation of the project's spirit: a love letter to their ancestors and culture that burns with a fierce and unyielding passion.
The EP, brought to life with the masterful production of Ngarrindjeri man Trials, is a cohesive and impactful body of work. It’s clear that Birdz and Fred Leone have a deep and long-standing creative kinship. As Birdz puts it, "'GIRA' is about keeping the fire alive. For our families, for our Mob and for the generations coming after us." This is evident from the first track to the last, as the cousins and collaborators weave a tapestry of sharp, poetic lyricism with vocals that soar in both English and Butchulla.
The new single 'Migaloo' is a standout, an uplifting track that doesn't shy away from confronting uncomfortable truths. It's a prime example of their ability to tackle heavy themes of injustice, trauma, and disenfranchisement with powerful honesty. The track, much like the entire EP, radiates resilience and a staunch pride in their culture.
Elsewhere on the EP, tracks like 'Brother' shine as a stellar collaboration, pairing Birdz's poetic lyrics fused with Aboriginal Creole and the soaring vocals of Leone in both Butchull and English. It's a track that hangs on a triumphant hook, "Brother lift up your brother, sisters, children and all. If they tell you to sit down, hold your head up and stand tall." Another highlight, 'Wanya Nyin Yanmanj' highlights the pair's continued resistance and Indigenous pride, showcasing both artists' passion and talents perfectly.
Fred Leone says he hopes the EP "can be an inspiration for Mob everywhere." It is also, he adds, "a challenge to so-called Australia: to nhaa-gu, burangam, yirimi -look, listen, learn and reckon with our stories, our resilience and the fire that can’t be put out." This is the core of the EP's message: it is a bold and uncompromising demand for recognition and respect.
Having earned a nomination for Artist of the Year at the National Indigenous Music Awards and with their single ‘Brother’ featuring in the NRL Indigenous Round TV promo spot, Birdz and Fred Leone are taking their truth to a wider audience. 'GIRA' is a triumph of identity, a declaration of a fire that will continue to burn brightly, illuminating a path for all who listen. It's an essential and unforgettable piece of music.
