Sloans Grove, a South Carolina-based rock outfit, has recently unleashed their self-titled debut album, a collection that proves good things come to those who wait. For a band that only formed in March of 2024, the record feels remarkably cohesive and fully realised, building perfectly on the long-standing chemistry between its four members: vocalist Brittany Garrett, guitarist Cory Jobes, bassist Matt Farmer, and drummer/producer Jonathan Stephens.
The album opens with a bang, immediately setting a tone of urgent, guitar-driven energy. Tracks like 'Above It All' feel like a heartfelt tribute to Detroit's rock heritage, channelling a sense of history and warmth through big riffs and Garrett’s commanding delivery. The song is a standout moment, a fast-paced anthem with a chorus that burrows its way into your brain and stays there.
But Sloans Grove aren't all high-octane rock; they show their versatility with tracks like 'Inside Out,' which beautifully balances quiet introspection with moments of explosive power. The intro’s delicate tones give way to a huge, emotionally charged chorus, demonstrating the band's dynamic range. Garrett’s vocals are especially noteworthy here, moving from a vulnerable softness to a bold, confident presence with ease. The track’s funky rhythms and killer riffs blend seamlessly with a rich alt-rock sound, creating something both fresh and nostalgic.
The band’s third single, 'Two Souls,' is another highlight, built on gritty, distorted riffs and a driving rhythm section. It's a raw, yet carefully crafted track, made even more distinctive by the addition of a tasteful organ texture. The lyrics feel intentionally ambiguous, allowing the listener to find their own meaning in its story of connection and change.
This "less is more" approach is something the band consciously aimed for. As they put it, "We wanted to create a solid rock album that flows nicely front to back and requires multiple plays to let it sink into the listener. Taking the 'less is more' approach opened up the door for us to do whatever we wanted."
This debut is a strong statement from a band that knows exactly who they are. Sloans Grove have delivered a record that is both musically engaging and emotionally resonant, a collection of songs that feels both powerful and personal. It’s a stellar start for a band with a bright future.
